TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY
Since retiring as a Justice of the Peace and returning to elective municipal office I’ve made traffic and road safety my top priority.
Mono launched a Community Safety Task Force in 2019 consisting of members of the public, Mono Police Services Board and Council members.
The Task Force held a well attended public meeting, surveyed the public and issued a report with 17 recommendations. The Report was adopted by Mono Council and we acted on things within our purview.
Among other things, we financially augmented our contract with the OPP for more traffic enforcement and invested in rubberized speed bumps to be deployed in residential problem areas but pleas to the Province to take the actions only they can take have fallen on deaf ears.
Since 2019 successive letters, meetings with Ministers, MTO staff and MPPs have not resulted in progress.
We don’t give up and recently Mono Council passed my Motion to declare a ‘Road Safety Emergency’.
Mono called on the Province and other municipalities to support our initiative. So far over 18 municipalities large and small throughout Ontario have supported our Motion and we expect that number to grow.
The Task Force Report, correspondence with the Province and the ‘Road Safety Emergency’ Motion can be read here by clicking on links.
A meeting is now scheduled for the end of March with the Minister of Transportation. Additionally Mono will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Saturday April 27th to discuss among other things traffic and road safety. I am hopeful the Province will finally agree that a comprehensive approach needs to be taken to address traffic and road safety.
